Swarm Community Call, 30 April – Recap

April’s Swarm Community Call was intentionally different: rather than the usual monthly segment rotation, the call served as a high-level report-out from the Swarm Accelerator Hackweek in Budapest—a week-long, invitation-only sprint bringing together Swarm contributors, ecosystem teams (including Solar Punk), and external builders. The goal wasn’t to dive deep into implementation details, but to surface what teams tried to solve, why it matters, and what these experiments suggest about the “missing middle layers” Swarm needs to become easier to use in real life.

Swarm Accelerator Hackweek — What it was and what it proved

The Call opened with a framing that held throughout the call: Hackweek projects looked diverse on the surface—mobile browsing, storage capacity tooling, agent-to-agent data exchange, access control + identity, food traceability, messaging layers, email, and even Ethereum data access—but they all pointed at the same question: what still needs to exist around Swarm’s protocol foundations to make the network more accessible, composable, and usable without friction.

Sandor A. Nagy (Swarm Foundation COO) reinforced that framing: Swarm is increasingly past the “can Swarm do this?” stage and into the “how do people actually use and compose it?” stage. In his view, the strategic value of Hackweek was exactly that—highlighting the missing middle layers that help applications coordinate, integrate, and feel usable to end users.

He also pointed to two concrete examples as signals of maturity:

  • a notification system layer that makes collaboration and messaging patterns more viable, and
  • an early agent-oriented data marketplace demo—something previously framed as a longer-term roadmap idea—built into a working prototype within days.

**Project selection and direction **

András shared how the project set came together: a small organizing committee collected ideas from across teams and partners, then prioritized for usefulness and diversity, while spotting overlaps and encouraging merges where multiple viewpoints strengthened the same goal. The underlying intent was to accelerate areas that Swarm wants tangible progress on—especially around usability and real-world application paths—and to seed projects that could plausibly become production-ready with continued work.

What followed was a presentation of selected Hackweek projects – the rest of the highlights are to be presented at the next Swarm Community Call.

**Hackweek highlight: agent-to-agent data exchange with payments and access control **

Andrei walked through a proof of concept exploring what it would take for agents (and humans) to buy and sell data on Swarm. The key claim wasn’t “AI on Swarm” as a slogan—it was whether Swarm can function as a native exchange environment when combined with three load-bearing components:

  • x402 for payment flow,
  • an on-chain agent identity layer (described as ERC-8004-based agent identity / registry), and
  • ACT (access control trie) for fine-grained, cryptographic gating of data.

The demo showed an agent registry dashboard, where on-chain agent identity points to a Swarm-hosted “agent card” that includes service endpoints and a catalog. A purchase flow triggered a small USDC payment via the x402 server, then the buyer was added to the access list so the purchased item could be decrypted and downloaded.

Two practical takeaways were emphasized:

  • ACT is powerful, but would benefit from better tooling to be widely integrable.
  • MCP matters as a translation layer: agents don’t reason well about low-level primitives (postage economics, deferred upload thresholds, feed topic derivation), but they can reason about intentions. MCP reframes Swarm operations into legible actions so agents can use Swarm operationally rather than theoretically.

**Hackweek highlight: “Volumes API” and predictable storage capacity **

Andrew presented a project initially framed as a subscription registry and refined into a Volumes API—a response to a common pain point: postage stamps function like a prepaid balance that ticks down, but because pricing is dynamic, it’s hard to predict exactly when storage will expire. For real applications (like hosting websites), that forces builders into a pattern of constant monitoring and manual top-ups.

The idea flips the model: instead of “prepay and watch it decay,” you set a wallet with funds and the system handles recurring payments / automated top-ups, keeping capacity available until explicitly cancelled—closer to a “reservation” model in terms of UX, without undermining the economic logic of the network.

Andrew’s point was blunt and practical: this is a “boring” infrastructure problem, but solving it removes one more reason builders quietly decide not to ship on Swarm. Many teams can build custom solutions—but having a reusable layer reduces friction and accelerates adoption.

**Hackweek highlight: Freedom Browser goes mobile **

Meinhard and Florian shared progress on porting the peer-to-peer Freedom Browser to native Android and iOS, with the key objective being direct network access without reliance on gateways. Their argument was simple: Swarm has been desktop/server-shaped so far; mobile is where people actually live, and gateway-only access undermines the decentralization story.

On Android, development moved quickly due to platform openness and existing work; on iOS, the surprise was that porting the node proved more feasible than expected—within the first day they had early versions working, and the project continued to harden in the days after.

From a user perspective, the breakthrough is straightforward: you can resolve and load Swarm content directly via a node running on your phone—not through a third-party gateway. They also highlighted:

  • an early Android APK alpha,
  • support for resolving ENS and direct Swarm hashes via the local node, and
  • a demo application (“Swarmit,” described as a decentralized Reddit-like app using Swarm + Gnosis).

The stated next step is shipping mobile across platforms so the “decentralized web” is accessible where people browse—on iPhone and Android—while also increasing the amount of compelling content and apps that exist on Swarm.

**Hackweek highlight: Demail – Email with Swarm **

Aata described a “back to the future” style project: integrating Swarm + ENS into email workflows using familiar clients and patterns, rather than requiring new behaviors. The motivation wasn’t nostalgia—it was pragmatism: SMTP/IMAP are core internet protocols that became centralized into hyperscaler silos, and email still underpins identity and workflows (including PGP culture and even Linux kernel development practices).

The approach: a thin local bridge runs on your machine (similar to the local Bee pattern), and standard email clients connect to localhost via SMTP/IMAP ports while Swarm provides the backend. The pitch is an email system with no servers and no DNS dependency, designed to be censorship-resistant and robust while keeping Web3 complexity hidden under normal UX.

One more notable improvement: faster node startup

A final highlight came from a “non-official project” improvement: Abel reportedly reduced node startup time for building sufficient connections down to ~5 seconds—an important enabling step for browser clients and “instant-on” UX. The call flagged this as something worth publicizing and potentially presenting in a future community call.

Upcoming events and community touchpoints

The call closed with a practical run-through of what’s next:

  • ETHPrague (8–10 May): booth presence, talks, panel discussion, and hackathon bounties focused on making decentralized tech more “ship it” and less theoretical.
  • Workshop series: a reminder for How to decentralize any front end on 5 May, described as a hands-on path from simplest entry points to more self-sovereign setups.
  • A note that additional Hackweek projects not covered live will be featured in future Community Calls.
